Dreams and Nightmares Is Not a Halloween Costume. It's a Haunting.

Dreams and Nightmares Is Not a Halloween Costume. It's a Haunting.

Pumpkin is not scary

Every October the fragrance internet decides to be "dark." Smoke, incense, burnt sugar, a black bottle, the word gothic in the caption. It is fun. It is also a costume. You take it off on November 1st and nobody remembers what you smelled like.

Dreams and Nightmares was never built for a holiday. It was built on one idea: the thing you want and the thing you're afraid of usually show up at the same time, wearing the same face. Spooky season just made that easier to explain.

What it actually smells like

It opens cold. Pink pepper, cardamom, eucalyptus, and bergamot, the kind of sharp air that makes you pull your jacket tighter. Then the ground gives out. Patchouli, petrichor, and wet earth, the smell of a forest an hour after rain, when it's beautiful and you are also very aware you are alone. The base is moss and amber woods. Warm, finally, but only because you've stopped moving.

Calm until it isn't. That is the whole arc, on your skin, for the rest of the night.

The haunting is the point

A horror scent wants to scare you. Dreams and Nightmares wants to keep you. The person you can't stop thinking about. The job that could wreck you and the one you keep applying for anyway. The text you drafted at 1am. Desire and fear arrive together, and the honest move is to not send either of them away.

So no, it does not smell like a haunted house. It smells like the walk home after, when you realize you'd go back.

Yes, we said petrichor

We know. We made the chart. Petrichor is performative coolness and we are performing it, because there is no other word for the smell of dry ground getting rained on, and because you are going to ask what it means, and we want you to.

When to wear it this week

  • The party where you are the only one not in costume. You still win.
  • Halloween night in, lights off, something unsettling on the TV, something comforting on your wrists.
  • The cold walk home from either of the above.
  • November 1st. The best day of the year to feel exactly like this.

How Dreams and Nightmares wears

  • Eau de Parfum at 20% concentration, in a 30mL bottle meant to be finished.
  • Composed by Elena Valdivieso Ruiz at Robertet.
  • Scent family: woody. Earthy, mysterious, grounding. Unisex, and one of the most-asked-about bottles in the line for exactly that reason.
  • Top notes: pink pepper, cardamom, eucalyptus, bergamot. Heart: patchouli, petrichor, wet earth. Base: moss, amber woods.
  • Two sprays on the neck will carry you from the first drink to the walk home. The moss and amber woods are still there in the morning.
  • $125 for 30mL. Also in the Discovery Set if you'd rather be haunted in 1mL first.

Mark the moment

You don't need a costume to be the strangest thing in the room. You need two sprays and a reason to stay out late.
